Welcome

We are a small club in the village of Wheldrake in York. Our club consists of two senior teams. The first XI are in Division 2 of the York & District Senior Cricket League (Ebor) with the 2XI playing in Division 2 of the York Vale Cricket League. We have four junior sides, U15, U13, U11 and U9 in the York and District Junior League and an All Stars Centre. We are also the former champions of the Canon Hedley Cup, an annual local village cricket competition.

Our club is located at the Wheldrake Playing Fields and Village Hall.

2022 2XI Fixtures

The York Vale Cricket League has been in contact with the club regarding the number of 2XI cricket matches that have been conceded this season so far. Whilst they acknowledge that this is not unique to Wheldrake CC, they have asked for a plan on how the club would address this.

Despite having a healthy membership through a successful offseason recruitment campaign, players are finding it difficult to commit to matches on a regular basis. With the holiday season fast approaching, it is only expected to compound the problem.

Both the 1XI and 2XI Captains, and a number of members have been trying to recruit new players, loan players from other clubs and to involve the junior members in senior matches. There has been renewed commitment, but has unfortunately not alleviated the uncertainty that the Vale League requires.

There was also a proposal put forward by both the Secretary and the Vale League to play the 2XI matches on Sundays, but there has been no clear consensus on whether or not this would be a viable option, as once again player commitment could not be guaranteed for both Saturday and Sunday fixtures.

After discussions with the Vale League two further proposals where put forward;
  1. To continue to try and fulfil as many of the 2XI fixtures as possible with members, loans and juniors, or
  2. To follow Hirst Courtney, and suspend the 2XI for the remainder of the season, with a view to regrouping in the offseason with a renewed recruitment drive.

Surprisingly, the view from the League is that option 2 is the most viable, and their preference.

Although the Club's membership in the York North Premier League is paramount, Wheldrake CC see having a 2XI as a vital part of the club development plan. The Secretary has discussed alternative solutions with York Cricket Club surrounding dual registrations, loan players and an alternative Sunday league where playing cricket in a more flexible format could take place. These discussions remain ongoing with other clubs being consulted.

The Club remains committed to providing a 2XI and a midweek team, however the Vale League require a response from Wheldrake CC as a matter of urgency.

Due to the urgency of the request, a committee meeting will be called at the earliest convenience, with all invited to attend. Unless a firm commitment from players can be obtained to fulfil two fixtures on Saturdays, the club will have to opt for the second option and suspend the 2XI from the Vale League for the remainder of the season.
