Wheldrake 1XI Lose To Askham Bryan Despite Maiden 100
For the second week Wheldrake fielded a younger 1XI with some juniors making their senior debut. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Wheldrake had a shaky start losing opener Ed Rouse for 0, followed shortly thereafter by Simon Taylor for 1. Stand in captain Simon Rouse and Ben Challis stabilised the innings and put on a hundred run partnership. After Rouse departed, Challis continued to score freely and managed to get is maiden 100 before finishing on 106. Unfortunately the rest of the batsmen couldn't push on and Wheldrake were all out for a respectable 155.
Wheldrake started well with the ball with openers Jack Wilson (junior) and Dan Southern both bagging an early wicket each. An injury to Ed Rouse meant Wheldrake's fielding capabilities were affected and the lack of support bowlers meant Wheldrake couldn't contain the Askham batsmen, reaching the target with just three wickets down. It was a valiant effort form the young side.
Wheldrake U13 lose to Dunnington
Unfortunately the U13's couldn't follow up lasts weeks success against Dunnington. The Wheldrake bowlers had a good start with the ball and managed to contain the Dunnington batsmen for most of the innings. A late charge by Dunnington saw them reach 93 which was well within the reach of the Wheldrake batsmen.
Unfortunately Wheldrake's chase got off to a poor start with some silly run outs gifting Dunnington early wickets. Wheldrake managed to recover the innings but were always behind the required run rate. It looked like it would be a close finish but unfortunately Wheldrake lost too many wickets at crucial times. Wheldrake reply of 82 just short of the required target.

Malton & Old Malton 61 (M Cass 6-21) lost to Wheldrake 62-0 (L Fearn 32no) by 10 wkts
MALTON & Old Malton were sent spinning to a crushing 10-wicket defeat at the hands of Wheldrake slow bowler Mark Cass.
Despite going for 10 runs in his first over, Cass finished with 6-21 as Malt were shot out for 61. Malt were always on the backfoot after Les Fearn struck twice early on to remove both openers. Five batsmen failed to score and but for a patient 26 by Chris Bingham it would have been an even more embarrassing total.
Les Fearn (32no) and skipper Martin Lambert (20no) knocked off the runs in 14 overs.

Wheldrake 70-0 beat Stockton & Hopgrove ll 69 by 10 wkts
Tight early Wheldrake bowling had Stockton & Hopgrove II in big trouble before Ashley Quinn, playing for the first time in four years, mopped up the lower order with 4-5 from 29 deliveries to set up a 10-wicket win. Les Fearn (3-19), bowling in tandem with his son, Dave, conceded just 35 between them off their full ration of overs as Stockton’s batters could only muster 69 in total. Anthony Carter (34no) and Martin Lambert (31no) rattled off the runs in 14.2 overs.

Ovington II 189-7 beat Wheldrake 180-8 by 9 runs
Ovington II’s Harry Buckley hit six sixes in his match-winning unbeaten 64 against Wheldrake. Coming in at five down, he peppered the boundary after Les Fearn’s 12-3-26 had made inroads with Dave Fearn and Martin Lambert also striking twice each. Ovngton totaled an unlikely 189-7. With Anthony Carter (57) and Lambert (51) at the crease, Wheldrake looked fairly well placed at 104-2, but Carter played on against Sam Prangnell and Lambert was run out by a sharp piece of fielding. That changed the dynamic of the game and Jonathan Souch came on near the end to finish the game with 4-34, Ovington winning a fine game by nine runs.

VETERAN Les Fearn included a hat-trick in his 12-5-8-5 all bowled analysis as Wheldrake beat Yapham by nine wickets. Wheldrake won the toss and elected to field and their bowlers didn't disappoint, exploiting a difficult wicket. Fearn senior was right on the money, bowling in tandem with his son Dave, who took 2-21 in 8.4 overs. Yapham were bowled out for 71 and despite some tight bowling, Wheldrake won with eight overs to spare with Anthony Carter (34no) in control.

Les Fearn maintained his fine bowling form for Wheldrake who beat Askham Bryan by seven wickets. His first spell left him with figures of 4-8 from eight overs, returning to bowl four more accurate overs, finishing with 4-22. Askham laboured to 30-5 after being put in on a tough wicket and only Rob Dale’s 25 got them up to 103-9 by tea, Mark Cass claiming 3-25. Martin Lambert scored 30 and Nick Myers struck a rapid 31 not out as Wheldrake won with ten overs to spare.

LES Fearn continued his brilliant form as Wheldrake stormed to victory in the top-of-the-table clash with Acomb.
He was to the fore again as Wheldrake toppled Acomb by nine wickets in spectacular fashion to take over the leadership. Fearn had an analysis of 8.4-2-17-7, while his son, Dave, claimed 3-19 as Acomb were routed for 38 in 16.3 overs. Five of Fearn senior’s victims were bowled and in the last three games has taken 16 wickets for the concession of just 47 runs.

WHELDRAKE show no signs of loosening their grip on division three after their mean bowling attack, led by Mark Cass’ 4-13, winkled out Thorpe Willoughby for 71.
New ball pair Les and Dave Fearn restricted Thorpe to 25-3 in the opening 16 overs, Les Fern going on to take 3-18 and son Dave conceding just six runs in his first eight-over spell. Cass and Sam Ensor (3-22), playing his first game since returning from university, gave Thorpe no respite. Although Martin Cooke hit back with 5-28 on a challenging wicket, Wheldrake won with ten overs to spare.

Malt made a steady start, reaching 34before James Spencer fell for 26 in the 14th over, Kevin Wilson went on to make 50 while Danny Southern 4-31 and the in-form Les Fearn were Wheldrake’s most successful bowlers. Wheldrake lost skipper Martin Lambert for a duck in the first over to Ollie Varey (2-20) and despite 41 from Anthony Carter their innings never really got going and were bowled out for 90. Nick Lock took 3-19, spinner Spencer claimed 3-29 and Wayne Cullen 2-13 on a crumbling wicket.

WHELDRAKE took a step closer to promotion with an emphatic win against Stockton & Hopgrove II.
Anthony Carter (119no) and Martin Lambert (61) took advantage of some wayward bowling with a second-wicket stand of 129 to help take Wheldrake to 244-4 at tea. Jamie Smith was the pick of the bowlers with 2-24.
Another accurate bowling display by Les Fearn, who had figures of 12-5-16-0, kept the pressure on the Stockton batsman, enabling David Fearn, Mark Cass and Ben Challis to pick up a couple of wickets each. Wheldrake used eight bowlers, including a first senior bowl for Challis, as Stockton closed on 130-7, Phil Herridge scoring a patient 35.

Hopes of an all-Ovington final where dashed when the South Bank-based club’s third string were beaten in the semi by Wheldrake.
Ovington III didn’t get enough runs on the board against Wheldrake whose Les Fearn bowled with deadly accuracy, returning 10-5-5-3. Although Andrew Tomlinson released the shackles with 52 before being run out, Mark Cass picked up 4-54 as Ovington totalled 134-8.
A partnership of 64 between Danny Southern and Ben Challis (49) enabled Wheldrake to win by six wickets with four overs to spare. Southern (50no) hit the winning runs to notch his maiden senior half-century. Op Sorn-in bowled well for Ovington to take 3-33.
Wheldrake will now take on Ovington II in the final at North Cave on August 31.

Wheldrake took a step closer to promotion by thumping Bishopthorpe II by nine wickets, Runs were hard to come by for Bishopthorpe early on with the first wicket falling for nine in the 12th over. Stuart Watson made 46 to get Bish to 118-9 at tea while the bowling honours were claimed by Dave Fearn who took 3-22 . Mark Hamilton (54no) and Ben Challis (39no) wrapped up maximum points with an unbroken partnership of 104 although Challis led a charmed life of occasions, being bowled by a no ball and dropped twice.

Ben Busby took 4-27 and Ian Kirkup 3-25 as Wheldrake could only muster 101-8, Ben Challis top scoring with a modest 24. Op Sor-In, Jed Fowke and Brandon Bishop had kept it tight early on, restricting Wheldrake to 44 from 16 overs – a stranglehold they never relinquished. Stefan Littlewood led Ovington’s victory charge with an unbeaten 54 from 45 balls, dominating an opening stand of 58 with Kirkup (14). It was his first Vale League half century.
