2022 2XI Fixtures
The York Vale Cricket League has been in contact with the club regarding the number of 2XI cricket matches that have been conceded this season so far. Whilst they acknowledge that this is not unique to Wheldrake CC, they have asked for a plan on how the club would address this.
Despite having a healthy membership through a successful offseason recruitment campaign, players are finding it difficult to commit to matches on a regular basis. With the holiday season fast approaching, it is only expected to compound the problem.
Both the 1XI and 2XI Captains, and a number of members have been trying to recruit new players, loan players from other clubs and to involve the junior members in senior matches. There has been renewed commitment, but has unfortunately not alleviated the uncertainty that the Vale League requires.
There was also a proposal put forward by both the Secretary and the Vale League to play the 2XI matches on Sundays, but there has been no clear consensus on whether or not this would be a viable option, as once again player commitment could not be guaranteed for both Saturday and Sunday fixtures.
After discussions with the Vale League two further proposals where put forward;
Surprisingly, the view from the League is that option 2 is the most viable, and their preference.
Although the Club's membership in the York North Premier League is paramount, Wheldrake CC see having a 2XI as a vital part of the club development plan. The Secretary has discussed alternative solutions with York Cricket Club surrounding dual registrations, loan players and an alternative Sunday league where playing cricket in a more flexible format could take place. These discussions remain ongoing with other clubs being consulted.
The Club remains committed to providing a 2XI and a midweek team, however the Vale League require a response from Wheldrake CC as a matter of urgency.
Due to the urgency of the request, a committee meeting will be called at the earliest convenience, with all invited to attend. Unless a firm commitment from players can be obtained to fulfil two fixtures on Saturdays, the club will have to opt for the second option and suspend the 2XI from the Vale League for the remainder of the season.

- To continue to try and fulfil as many of the 2XI fixtures as possible with members, loans and juniors, or
- To follow Hirst Courtney, and suspend the 2XI for the remainder of the season, with a view to regrouping in the offseason with a renewed recruitment drive.
Surprisingly, the view from the League is that option 2 is the most viable, and their preference.

Under Strength Wheldrake 1XI Lose At Westow
Wheldrake CC could only manage to get 7 players for the league fixture at Westow, this seasons hotly tipped champions. It was always going to be a difficult game as Westow have arguably the two best batsmen in the league. WCC batted first and although losing opener Anthony Carter in the 5'th over for 13, in form batsman Martin Lambert and Captain Nick Myers combined for a 43 run partnership. Myers took advantage of some short wide bowling from N Pratt, dispatching him for 16 in one over, before being caught on 25 off the bowling of Mark Earle. The Wheldrake batsmen could only add a few more runs, leaving Lambert on 33 not out and finishing the innings on 81 runs.
Wheldrake had a positive start to defending their total when opener Mark Earle was bowled by Anthony Carter in the second over for just 7 runs, followed by J Stephenson an over later, bowled by Mark Cass. This left Westow on 14 for 2 after three overs. A missed chance by Carter to catch Andy Welford off his own bowling could have been an expensive mistake, but Cass clean bowled him the following over. With Westow on 33 for 3, there was a slim chance of Wheldrake pushing the advantage, but with so many gaps in the field, it was difficult to build pressure. Westow managed to knock the remaining runs off without giving any further chances, finishing the game in the 14'th over.
WCC U13's Win At Ovington
Wheldrake U13's got the season off to a good start with a win at the Little Knavesmire against Ovington. Wheldrake won the toss and chose to bat. Openers James Watson and Logan Carter got the innings off to a solid start, putting 52 runs on before Watson was run out on 29, 1 run short of retiring. Carter was then involved in a second run out two overs later. This time running himself out for 14 runs. Matthew Wills and Captain Oliver Lambert pushed the scoring rate to get Wheldrake to 100 before Lambert was bowled for 14. Wheldrake closed their innings on 110 runs for 4 with Wills not out on 27 and A Sharma run out on the last ball.
Wheldrake started well in the field, getting an early wicket when big hitting S Rizby was run out in the first over. Wheldrake managed to keep the pressure on with some tight bowling and fielding, making it difficult for Ovington to keep up with the run rate. Wickets continued to fall, A Sharma getting a wicket with his first ball, and Robyn Carter 3 wickets in her first over. Although Wheldrake bowled and fielded well, they could only manage to take 7 wickets with some stiff resistance from the lower order. In the end the Wheldrake total was too much for Ovington who ended the match on 56 for 7 after their 20 overs.
WCC U9's Win at Clifton Alliance
Wheldrake U9's started the season off with a 31 run win over Clifton Alliance. Some great bowling by Wheldrake meant that Clifton could only manage 306, a total that was passed with two more overs left. The last batting pair then extended the lead without losing a wicket. Wheldrake finished on 337. Unfortunately as Wheldrake only had 5 players and had to borrow 3, Wheldrake could not claim the points.

Wheldrake lose to South Cave after batting collapse
Wheldrake hosted South Cave on the warmest weekend of the year so far. Having lost the toss, Wheldrake were asked to bat on a firm wicket that offered little for the bowlers. Wheldrake lost opener Simon Rouse when he was run out for 0 in the 4th over. South Cave had little to celebrate when Anthony Carter and opener Martin Lambert combined for a 70 run partnership. Both batsmen found it easy to score runs and pushed the run rate above 5 an over. Wheldrake were on course for a 200+ score when Carter hit a low full toss straight to the mid wicket fielder and was caught on 38. Although the run rate slowed, Simon Taylor and Lambert managed to get the score to 99 before Lambert was bowled for 48. Only Taylor could manage to get a double figure score and ended on 22 before a batting collapse, which included 5 ducks, saw Wheldrake bowled out for 118 in the 33rd over. Cave bowler A Kalwani ending with 6 wickets for 26 runs off 10 overs.
It was always going to be a difficult total to defend, but when Wheldrake opening bowler Ben Challis grabbed a wicket in the first over, Wheldrake hopped for a similar collapse from the South Cave batsmen. This wasn't to be as the Wheldrake bowlers struggled to build enough pressure with the ball. A fortuitous run out of set batsmen S Coulson on 34 followed by a catch of spinner Mark Cass made a small opening, but it was not enough as Cave batsman Ollie Pierce (34no) and Scorah (16no) knocked the remaining runs to end the game in the 28'th over.

Wheldrake Beat Thixendale In Thriller
Wheldrake got the season off to a positive start with a thrilling win over newly promoted Thixendale. Thixendale won the toss and after much deliberation chose to bat on a soft wicket. Wheldrake picked up two injuries in quick succession, losing opening bowler E Rouse in the third over followed by N Myers a few overs later, forcing Wheldrake to introduce the spinners early in the match. With the soft surface offering grip for the ball, it made it difficult for the Thixendale batsmen to score, and found themselves 26 for 1 after 11 overs. The Thixendale batsmen did however start to make use of the shorter boundaries to push the scoring rate up, with L Milburn (64) being the top scorer. The Wheldrake bowlers managed to keep chipping away at the wickets and were looking like restricting Thixendale to a sub 150 score. A Carter (12-43-3) was the pick o f the bowlers with M Cass, N Myers and M Lambert adding valuable contributions. A late partnership saw Thixendale reach 181 before being bowled out on the penultimate ball.
Thixendale made an early breakthrough, removing opener S Rouse in the second over. A Carter (72) and M Lambert (20) combined for a 61 run partnership which provided a stable base for the Wheldrake innings. B Challis (17) played a vital supporting role to A Carter and N Myers (41) to see Wheldrake get within reach of the Thixendale total. Although Wheldrake managed to keep close to the asking rate, it was always going to be a close finish with the balance swinging between the two sides. Thixendale had the upper hand when Wheldrake, needing 16 off the last two overs, lost E Rouse and could only manage 2 runs off J Megginson (11-39-3), leaving Wheldrake with 14 to get off the last over with N Myers on strike. Thixendale pushed their advantage further by bowling three dot balls. This was followed up by a wide, giving slim hope to Wheldrake. N Myers skied the next ball to the short boundary, the Thixendale fielder almost managed to palm the ball back infield, but was unable to with the ball dropping over the boundary for 6. There was no doubt about the next shot has Myers dispatched the ball for 6, clearing the road. This left the scores tied with Wheldrake needing just one for victory off the last ball. N Myers calmly guided the next ball for a single to win the match.

2018 AGM
Our 2018 Annual General Meeting is to be held at the Wenlock Arms on Sunday 18 February 2018, 19:30. Anyone interested in finding out about cricket in the village is more than welcome to attend.
U13 Team
This season we are glad to announce that we are entering an U13 team into the York and District Junior League. The process started by Junior Manager Martin Lambert 6 years ago with our U9's has moved into the next phase where the original U9's have graduated to U13 level.
We are always on the look out for new players and we would be glad to welcome new players to the club, whether or not you've played cricket before.
Please feel free to get in touch via our contacts page.

ECB Waitrose Club Open Day
We will be starting our preparation for the coming season which will see our U11's in the hard ball championship. We will be holding U11 winter nets at the Mount School, York starting on Friday 26 February from 6pm -7:30pm, continuing until mid April before moving outdoors.
The club does provide the necessary protective equipment, with the exception of abdominal protectors. We'd ask that each child supply their own. Sports direct do have the shorts and abdo guard on sale. Anyone wishing to bring their own equipment are free to do so.
We will be charging £3 per session to cover the facility hire.

For the second year in a row, Wheldrake have been champions of their respective division. This year was particularly exciting as we managed to beat second placed Westow by 1 point to take the division 2 title, and gain promotion back into division 1. It has been a strong all round performance from the team which we hope will continue into the next season.
In addition to picking up the Division 2 trophy, there were also two individual awards won this season. The leading bowling averages was won by Les Fearn and the Harry Smith Wicketkeeping Award for the most dismissals in the league was won by Anthony Carter.

Division 2 Champions
The holiday season has taken its toll on team selection and player availability. Despite the lack of numbers, Wheldrake have retained a slender 1 point lead over Ovington to remain at the top of the table. Ovington are the only team to have beaten Wheldrake twice this season and remain title contenders with an easier run till the end of the season.
Wheldrake have also managed to secure a place in the Pendergast Memorial Cup. Having beaten Ovington's 3rd team, they face Ovington's 2nd team in the final.

Junior Cricket
Hard to believe that the cricket season is almost upon us again. As you may have gathered from the flyer via school we will be running coaching sessions for the Under 9’s again this summer, this includes children up to and including year 4. The first four weeks are planned to be held indoors, starting this Thursday (18th April) at Thorganby Village Hall, 6pm to 7pm, hopefully in 4 weeks time it will be warm enough to practice outdoors, but after last year I am taking nothing for granted!
We have entered a team into the York Junior League, after last year’s encouraging performances, we finished in runner up spot, don’t shout it too loudly, behind a girls team! – but it was our first season and for many of the boys their first experience of cricket of any format.
If anyone still has a playing shirt from last season could they return it to me over the next couple of weeks so we can re-issue to the team selected for our first game (w/c 6th May, away at Acomb)
We will be charging £1 per child per week to cover the hall hire and league fees, please ensure the children bring a drink and wear suitable clothing for indoor use.
Under 11’s
Unfortunately we haven’t been able to coerce anyone into taking over the coaching of the under 11’s (years 5 and 6) this year, but between Andrew Stokes-Roberts and myself we hope to get some sessions planned outdoors in a couple of weeks time so we can at least maintain the progress made last year and give them some cricket.
Any questions please give me a shout
Thanks
Martin
